We plan to restore Dean Road Chapel, which is at the heart of Scarborough’s Dean Road Cemetery, and bring it back into use for the benefit of the local community. The building needs extensive renovation, and the main funding for this is currently the subject of a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund.
When the building work is finished, the restored chapel will act as a vibrant heritage hub, offering heritage activities, resources relating to the history encapsulated in the cemetery both digital and paper based, cemetery trails, educational resources, volunteering opportunities as well as event and meeting space and a simple café area providing light refreshments. The brief for the restoration will ensure that the building is as accessible as possible to people with a disability, including those with physical, sensory, and cognitive impairments.
